Arabians end four-game skid with win over Yorktown

PENDLETON — After a four-game skid, and a heartbreaking loss the week prior, Pendleton Heights bounced back in a much-needed way at home on Friday night.

The Arabians (3-5, 2-4) picked up their second Hoosier Heritage Conference victory of the season with a 47-20 win agianst Yorktown (5-3. 3-3).

On the legs of senior running back Keaton Jones, the Arabians jumped out to an early lead.

Midway through the opening quarter, Jones broke through the line of scrimmage for a 20-yard touchdown and after a Yorktown punt, Jones added to the lead with a 78-yard touchdown run.

Later in the half, a 26-yard Jones run down to the 1-yard line set up a 1-yard touchdown for his third score of the first half.

Jones rushed 17 times for 170 yards and three scores in the opening half.

With 1:11 to go before the break, quarterback Colton Frank connected with Jacob Rowley on a 15-yard touchdown pass to push the Arabians lead to 26-0.

Out of the half, a big kick return set up the Tigers for their first score of the game on a 1-yard Noah Lang touchdown run, but the Arabians answered right back.

A 9-yard Frank quarterback keeper put Pendleton Heights ahead 33-6 and in the fourth quarter, Jones’ fourth touchdown of the night pushed the lead to 40-13.

To cap off the Pendleton Heights offensive display, Frank found Rowley on a 41-yard touchdown strike in the fourth quarter.

Frank completed 18 of his 27 pass attempts for 225 yards and two touchdowns and ran in one score.

Rowley led all receivers with seven catches for 104 yards and two touchdowns, and Nate DeRolf added six catches for 102 yards.

Jones finished the night with 25 carries for 225 yards and four touchdowns. It was the fifth time this season that Jones had gone for over 100 yards rushing, was the second time he’s eclipsed the 200-yard mark and was his fourth game scoring multiple touchdowns.

Over the weekend, the IHSAA Sectional draw took place, with the Arabians drawing New Castle in the opening round. Pendleton Heights won the regular season matchup 42-21.

The final postseason warmup for Pendleton Heights will take place tomorrow on the road at 7 p.m. at Shelbyville.

The Golden Bears are 1-7 overall (0-6, HHC). Since an opening week win versus Greensburg, they’ve dropped seven straight games.

During the last three games, they’ve been shut out, losing 33-0 to Yorktown, 35-0 to New Palestine and 34-0 to Mt. Vernon.

Sophomore Tyler Gwinnup leads the Golden Bears under center, with four touchdown passes on the year.

At running back, sophomore Grantland Fitzgerald sees the bulk of the carries and leads the team with 29 receptions for 232 yards and three scores.

The Arabians have won the last six meetings with Shelbyville.
