Classic cars on display at Kiwanis club event

PENDLETON — With the sounds of 50’s and 60’s music and the smell of K-burgers wafting through the air, people walked through Falls Park on Saturday looking at classic cars.

John Shull, organizer of the show, said “We have 158 cars this year.” The car show which is sponsored by Pendleton Kiwanis was the combined idea of John Carey and Neil Shull. The first show was in 2011. Tragically Shull died shortly after that. The Kiwanis decided to continue the car show in Shull’s memory.

Dennis Johnson, 71, was showing off his 1969 Dodge Dart Swinger.

“My son Toby and I rebuilt this car, it took us 20 years,” he said.

Sitting with Johnson was his good friend, Larry Gardner, 88. This was the fourth year they have been showing their cars at the show. Gardner’s ‘29 Mercedes SSK rebuild won the People’s Choice award.

Rylee Ransom brought his 1939 Model A Ford.

“My great uncle and great grandpa rebuilt it,” Ransom said. “I have no idea how long it has been in our family.”

Dave Voelrathe has a 1955 Chevy that his wife found on eBay. Voelrathe’s son found an all-white pedal car and sent it to his dad. Voelrathe painted it to match and also had it on display.

Neil Shull’s son, John, took over running the car show 6 years ago. The Kiwanis donate all the proceeds to children’s causes in Madison County.

“I bought 1500 hamburgers and will probably sell out,” Carey said.

One of the traditions of the car show is the playing of the National Anthem. Immediately following the anthem, all the car owners rev their engines.

“It’s a community outlet,” Shull said. “The town of Pendleton has been very supportive of us.”
