Parks department offers talks

PENDLETON — Pendleton Parks Department will lead a 30-minute “Batty for Bats!” program at 10 a.m. today, Thursday, July 18, at the Community Building parking lot near Pendleton Historical Museum in Falls Park.

The presentation is part of a weekly series of interpretive programs about the outdoors that started in May.

All programs start at 10 a.m. Programs marked with * take place at the start location (no hiking).

July 25

*Batty for Bats! (30 minutes) — Discussion will include why bats are important to have around and some of the myths associated with them. Participants will make a bat craft to take home. Meet at the Community Building.

Aug. 1

National Wellness Month Hike (1 hour) — A hike to promote wellness. Group will hike the Green Loop while learning about Falls Park and its amenities. Meet at the Community Building parking lot. Most of this hike is accessible with paved walkways.

Aug. 8

Wildflower Hike (1.5 hours) — Group will hike parts of Red, Yellow and Blue loops to see what’s blooming. Discussion will include how to seed harvest in the fall to keep growing native plants in the yard. Meet outside the Community Building.

Aug. 15

Disc Golf for Beginners (1 hour) — Falls Park has an 18-basket disc golf course. People are invited to come learn the basics. Group will hike the course, and people will have the chance to throw the disc and try their luck at getting it in a basket. Meet at the YMCA parking lot.

Aug. 22

Nature Journaling and Hike (1 hour) — Spend time creating a nature journal. Group will hike on parts of the Red Loop to see what to add in a journal. Geared toward pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, but all ages are welcome. Meet in the Community Building.

Aug. 29

*Nutty about Squirrels! (30 minutes) — Indiana is native to four species of squirrels. People can learn about the different species and some tips to enjoying them and keeping them out of bird feeders. Meet in the Community Building.

‘Picnic’ planned for Friday night

PENDLETON — South Madison Community Foundation is planning “Pendleton Picnic” for 6-8 p.m. Friday, July 26, at 118 N. Pendleton Ave.

There will be country music, family yard games, as well as gourmet hot dogs, ice cream and beverages available for purchase.

Parking is available at the Acton Academy, located at the corner of Water and Broadway streets.

Gallery offers art classes

PENDLETON — Gallery 119 in Pendleton offers a variety of art classes for children and adults.

Upcoming classes include:

Jewelry Class with Tracy Davidson (ages 22 and older) — 1-6 p.m. July 28. Participants will make a sterling figure 8 bracelet/anklet with a tag and matching clasp. Davidson will teach how to form and solder links. The cost is $65.

Concert in the Park set for July 28

PENDLETON — The Rock Bottom Boys of Madison County and Blue Grass Trio will perform a Concert in the Park at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 28, near the Falls Park Gazebo.

There is no admission charge. People can bring their own chairs or blanket.

Refreshments will be available for purchase.

American Legion plans benefit ride

PENDLETON — American Legion Post 117, 611 W. State St., Pendleton, plans the following events — open to members and non-members:

July 26: DJ Dex 8-11 p.m.

Regular events:

All-you-can-eat wings — 5-8 p.m. Thursdays.

Lunch specials (as well as regular menu) — starting at 11 a.m. weekdays, until food runs out.

Happy Hour — 3-6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays

Treasure Hunt drawing — 7 p.m. Fridays

The Legion’s general membership meeting is 6 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday each month. Public is welcome.

Sorority plans chicken, noodle dinner

MARKLEVILLE — Psi Phi Chapter of Kappa Delta Phi Sorority, Markleville, will play host to its annual Homemade Chicken & Noodle Dinner from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2, at Markleville Community Park shelter house during the Markleville Jamboree. Homemade chicken & noodles, mashed pototoes, green beans, dessert, iced tea or lemonade. Adults – $10. Kids age 3 to 10 – $5. Kids under 3 free. Park located on St Rd 38 just west of Markleville.

Markleville Jamboree set for Aug. 2-4

MARKLEVILLE — The annual three-day Markleville Jamboree is planned for the first weekend in August at Community Park, starting with a dinner and opening ceremony that Friday evening and ending with a tractor pull that Sunday.

There is no parking or admission cost.

Vendor booths are still available. The cost is $25 for two days. Contact [email protected] for details.

4:30-7:30 p.m. — Psi Phi Sisters Famous Homemade Chicken Noodle Dinner

6 p.m. — Opening Ceremony including flag ceremony and opening speech

5 p.m. — Tractor Show opens; all entries receive a plaque

5-6:30 p.m. — Signup for Kids Tractor Pull and obstacle course race. Ages 5-10 in the tractor area shelter house. Games begin at 6:30 p.m. There will be prizes.

People can stop by the information booth for raffle tickets, silent auction, event T-shirts and jamboree schedule.

Children’s inflatables/bounce houses open. $5 wrist band good all night.

5 p.m. — Concessions and booths open.

5 p.m. — “Visions Through Time” traveling military history museum encampment.

6:30 p.m. — Kids Tractor Pull and obstacle course begins.

7-8 p.m. — 200th Anniversary of Fall Creek Massacre presentation by Lance Stevens.

8-10 p.m. — Musician J.T. Sifuentes.

Saturday, Aug 3

9-11 a.m. — East Christian Church Men’s Breakfast: Eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy

9 a.m.-2 p.m. — Motorcycle Show: All bikes are welcome. Trophies and plaques will be awarded.

Motorcycles will be entered and parked on cement at the basketball court.

10 a.m.-noon — Accepting Cookie Contest entries. Entries must include six cookies on a plate with name and cellphone number on the bottom. People can also make and donate extra cookies and bakery items to be sold. All money will be added to the park building fund.

Cookies will be judged based on several characteristics, inside and out, including color, uniformity in shape and size, appearance and taste.

Cookie Contest winners will be announced on stage at 5:45 p.m., followed by bakery item auction sale.

11 a.m. — Parade lines up in the park. There will be a red, white and blue patriotic theme.

11:30 a.m. — Parade begins.

Noon — Booths/concessions open.

Noon-dusk — Children’s inflatables/bounce houses open. $5 wristband is good for amusements all day.

Noon — Information booth opens. Raffle tickets, silent auction, event T-shirts and Jamboree Schedules available.

Noon — Traveling military museum opens

Noon-1 p.m. — Family Bingo open to all ages; there will be prizes.

1:30-2:30 p.m. — Hedge-hog Hannah animal show is interactive with 10 animals participating.

3-4 p.m. — Magic Show presented by “Elfie” from Magication Station, the toy store in Pendleton. Elfie will also have a booth set up with a sampling of toys from his shop. There also will be balloon animals.

4:30 p.m. — Presentation by Mounds State Park Indiana Interpretive Naturalist Mary Doty; includes a take-home craft

4 p.m. — East Christian Church’s Taco Bar

5 p.m. — Silent auction closes, winners notified

5:45 p.m. — Cookie Contest winners announced on stage; bake sale to follow

6 p.m. — Quiz Bowl games on Free Stage

7 p.m. — New performer, Deven Niedenthal

Back-to-school

Back-to-school event set for park

INGALLS — Parents with children at Maple Ridge Elementary School have an opportunity to receive help with school supplies and more at an event set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 3 at Jesse Ireton Memorial Park in Ingalls.

Supplies that will be available include classroom supplies from include came from the MRES supply, backpacks and clothing.

There will be children’s games and a cookout.

The event is being sponsored by the school as well as Green Township, Outfitters, First United Methodist Church-Ingalls and Pendleton campuses, and South Madison Food Pantry.

In case of rain, the event will shift to Green Township Park, 10609 S. State Road 13.

Church’s Abundance Meal coming Aug. 14

MARKLEVILLE — The next East Christian Church Abundance Meal is set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 14, downstairs in the church, 124 E. Main St., Markleville.

The meal includes chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes, green beans, applesauce, rolls and dessert.

A free-will offering will be accepted.

Pack 232 plans ‘join night’

PENDLETON — Cub Scout Pack 232 is hosting a “Join Night” at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at Pendleton Christian Church, 1170 S. Pendleton Ave.

Organizers will share information about the pack, including about its activities, values, and tradition of community service and personal development.

It also will provide an opportunity to join.

Friends group plans for Lucky Duck Race

PENDLETON — Friends of the Pendleton Community Library’s Lucky Duck Race is set for 2 p.m. Sept. 7 in Falls Park near the falls.

The event raises funds to help Pendleton Community Public Library, 595 E. Water St.

People can “adopt” a duck at the library or during one of the following events: INCourage 5K and Kids Color Run — July 13; Pendleton Indiana Farmers Market — July 20, Aug. 10; and Heritage Fair — Sept. 6-7.

Friends is a non-profit organization that aims to enhance library resources, services, programs and community outreach.

Town seeks input on revitalization plan

PENDLETON — The Town of Pendleton is in the early stages of submitting a planning grant application to Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs to develop a new Downtown Revitalization Plan.

Planning grants are funded with Federal Community Development Block Grant dollars from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The program aims to encourage communities to plan for long-term holistic community development.
