Mike Cook, a member of the Madison County Amateur Radio Club, talks to a fellow ham radio operator north of Anderson on Saturday, July 6, from Falls Park, via his homemade portable setup comprised of a radio, antennae and tuner, as well as a power supply. “Everybody’s got different interests,” Cook said, explaining the draw to the ham radio. He said many of the group’s approximately 50 members are involved with emergency management, helping share direct observations during live events, such as severe weather. Some are primarily interested in the technology that enables people to communicate with people far away without using a phone or the Internet. The club meets the first Monday each month at Madison County Emergency Operations Center (EOC), 200 N. Delaware St., Anderson. Also, the club participates in a lot of events, Cook said: It will be out each night during the Madison County Fair (July 21-27) in Alexandria; Cook will be set up on the porch at the Pendleton Historical Museum in Falls Park on Sept. 7 during Heritage Fair; and, the club will be at Mounds State Park in Anderson on Sept. 7 for a program called Indiana Parks on the Air.
