PENDLETON — PENDLETON — “My mom always said no one is more close to God as when in a garden,” George Daugherty Jr. told people gathered Saturday at the northeast corner of Water Street and Pendleton Avenue to honor the late Charlene Daugherty.
The group dedicated a plaque recognizing the spot as “Charlene’s Corner.”
Charlene Daugherty moved to Pendleton in 1944 and went on to serve the community in many ways, including as a parks board member and park gardener and landscaper. She died in 2012.
George Daugherty Jr., who lives in Las Vegas, addressed a group of about 20 people who braved the rain for the ceremony.
“It’s wonderful to come back to Pendleton,” he said.
Sandi Butler, chairwoman of Historic Fall Creek, Pendleton Settlement, introduced George Daugherty Jr. and thanked the preservation group’s plaque committee (of which Butler is a member), Friends of Falls Park, and Park Director Aaron Burris and Maintenance Director Donnie Meyer for their help with the project.
