LAPEL — The award and celebration fit the recipient to a tee.

Lapel High School and the town honored golfer Macy Beeson with a parade and day of honor for doing what no one else in school history has ever done: bring home an individual IHSAA state championship.

“It’s quite an accomplishment for a sophomore,” Lapel Councilwoman Teresa Retherford said after the award presentation.

Beeson sat in the back of a convertible that drove slowly north on Main Street as clusters of supporters waved and clapped. She smiled and occasionally waved back.

The car stopped when it reached Town Hall.

Councilman Jason Kleinbub presented a plaque to Beeson declaring Friday Macy Beeson Day.

“The Town of Lapel hereby grants this award of excellence to Macy Beeson for her victory in the IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals October 3, 2020.

“Because of your commitment, determination, talent and sportsmanship, we the Lapel Town Council hereby declare October 9, 2020 Macy Beeson Day in the Town of Lapel.”

Kleinbub said the town like to celebrate when residents do “extraordinary things, and Macy did an extraordinary thing.

“We couldn’t be more proud of Macy.”

Beeson had a remarkable season. She won the Madison County, sectional and regional individual titles before wrapping it up with the biggest honor for all high school players.

She had a two-day score of 2-over-par at the IHSAA Girls Golf State Finals, held Oct. 2-3 at Prairie View Golf Course in Carmel.

Beeson beat second-place finisher Michaela Headlee, a freshman from Carmel High School, by one stroke. Beeson finished the two-day event with a score of 146.

On the final day of competition, Beeson birdied two of three par 3 holes and had two other birdies on par 4 holes. During the opening round on Oct. 2, she played even-par on 15 of 18 holes. She had a double-bogey on par 5 No. 18, a bogey on No. 8, a par 4 hole and her lone birdie on the par 4 No. 9 hole.

It was her second trip to the state finals. The Lapel team qualified for the first time in 2019, also held at Prairie View Golf Club. The Bulldogs finished 13th and Beeson, as a freshman, finished 13th, individually.
