PENDLETON — Preparation for the Madison County Wrestling Tournament continues this week, and the Pendleton Heights Arabians kept the tournament mindset going in their own Super Six meet Dec. 14.
For the day’s wrestling, the Arabians had four decisive wins but fell to East Central.
“They out-wrestled us,” Pendleton Heights head coach Dave Cloud said. “They were a superior team.”
Cloud said the roster of teams provides the opportunity for the Arabians to wrestle schools they do not see in the regular season and some they will face only in the postseason.
For the meet, three Arabians went undefeated for the day. They were Jarod Brown at 132 pounds, Justin Stephens at 220 pounds and Cade Campbell at heavyweight. Zach Sanford was the weight class champion at 170 pounds.
Brown, a state qualifier last year at 126 pounds, is notably considered one of the top wrestlers in the 132-pound class in the state this year and No. 2 in the New Castle semistate. Brown is 16-0 for the season.
Colin Gillespie, 182 pounds; Maverick Hamilton, 160 pounds; Gator Bynum, 145 pounds; Blake Nicholson, 120 pounds; and Elijah Creel, 113 pounds, went 4-1 on the day.
The Arabians travel to Lapel for the Madison County Tournament Dec. 21, and Cloud said he likes his team’s chances.
“Our conditioning is improving, and if we wrestle like we should, we have a chance of winning.”
After Christmas, the Arabians go through two days of competition at North Montgomery High School Dec. 27-28.
“Once the holidays are over, we move through the season pretty quick,” Cloud said.
The sectional tournament begins at the end of January.
