Armington’s -2 helps Lapel reclaim Madison County golf title

ANDERSON — After having their run of Madison County titles snapped last season, the Lapel girls golf team returned to the top of the pack.

Led by the top two individual finishers, sophomores Jane Armington and Annabelle Marshall, the Bulldogs bested the competition with ease.

Last season, it was Pendleton Heights ending Lapel’s streak of six consecutive county titles. This year, the Bulldogs made sure that wasn’t going to happen again, besting the runner-up Arabians by 39 strokes.

The title was Lapel’s 11th overall and seventh in the past eight years.

Leading the way to the Bulldogs top score of 339 was the sophomore transfer, Armington.

Last year, at Wes-Del, Armington won the Delaware County individual title. To make it two-for-two in individual county tries, Armington fired a personal best 2-under-par 71 in her first Madison County tournament. The score was 10 shots better than the rest of the field.

Starting on hole 17, her day started with a chip-in par save on the par-3 and kickstarted a round in which she bogeyed just twice.

She birdied hole 18, hole one and hole three to get under par early. She remained in red numbers the entire day.

Armington added her fourth and final birdie of the day on hole 15, ending the day with four birdies, two bogeys and 12 pars.

Her classmate, Marshall, fired an 81 to place second in the county for the second straight season. Freshman Claire Humerickhouse shot a 92 to earn all-county honors and Elly Carey ended her day with a 95. The score was 10 shots better than her previous best round.

The Arabians were led by a pair of All-County players in senior Zoe Lawrence and freshman Bella Shetterley. Lawrence led the way with a personal best score of 84 and Shetterley fired a 91 in her first go at the event.

Addison Summerall (100) and Morgan Bricker (103) rounded out the Arabians runner-up score of 378.

Along with Armington, Marshall, Lawrence, Shetterley and Humerickhouse, Alexandria’s Rylie Kellams (91) took the other All-county position.

Frankton (384), Alexandria (406), Anderson (424) and Elwood (459) rounded out the team scores.
