Parks department offers talks
PENDLETON — Pendleton Parks Department will lead a one-hour invasive plant hike beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 11, meeting in the Community Building parking lot near the Community Building in Falls Park.
The presentation is part of a weekly series of interpretive programs about the outdoors that started May 2.
Future programs
All programs start at 10 a.m. Programs marked with * take place at the start location (no hiking).
July 4
No morning programming as the park prepares for night event.
4:30 to 10 p.m.: 4th at the Falls event includes family-friendly activities, live music, food vendors and a firework show.
July 11
Invasive Plant Hike (1 hour) — What does invasive mean, and why should people care? Participants will hike the Red Loop and have the chance to learn how to identify some of the most common invasive species. Discussion will include ways to help keep the ecosystem healthy. Meet at the parking lot near the Community Building.
July 18
All Things Nature Hike (1 hour) — Group will make stops along the Red Loop to discuss different plants and animals native to the area. People should bring their nature-related questions to discuss. Meet at the Falls (near the Historical Museum).
July 25
*Batty for Bats! (30 minutes) — Discussion will include why bats are important to have around and some of the myths associated with them. Participants will make a bat craft to take home. Meet at the Community Building.
Aug. 1
National Wellness Month Hike (1 hour) — A hike to promote wellness. Group will hike the Green Loop while learning about Falls Park and its amenities. Meet at the Community Building parking lot. Most of this hike is accessible with paved walkways.
Aug. 8
Wildflower Hike (1.5 hours) — Group will hike parts of Red, Yellow and Blue loops to see what’s blooming. Discussion will include how to seed harvest in the fall to keep growing native plants in the yard. Meet outside the Community Building.
Aug. 15
Disc Golf for Beginners (1 hour) — Falls Park has an 18-basket disc golf course. People are invited to come out and learn the basics. Group will hike the course, and people will have the chance to throw the disc and try their luck at getting it in a basket. Meet at the YMCA parking lot.
Aug. 22
Nature Journaling and Hike (1 hour) — Spend time creating a nature journal. Group will hike on parts of the Red Loop to see what to add in a journal. Geared toward pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, but all ages are welcome. Meet in the Community Building.
Aug. 29
*Nutty about Squirrels! (30 minutes) — Indiana is native to four species of squirrels. People can learn about the different species and some tips to enjoying them and keeping them out of bird feeders. Meet in the Community Building.
4th at the Falls coming up
PENDLETON — This year’s 4th at the Falls celebration, sponsored by Main Street Pendleton, is set for 4:30 to 10:30 p.m. Thursday, July 4, at Pendleton Sports Complex.
There will be food trucks, craft vendors, yard games and face painting.
Indianapolis cover band Stella Luna and the Satellites will provide live music from 7 to 10 p.m.
Activities conclude with a firework display.
WEEM Radio (91,7) will be broadcasting patriotic music during the fireworks show.
An inaugural event golf cart parade will begin at 3:30 p.m. at Pendleton Elementary School. The route runs north on East Street to Water Street; west to Pendleton Avenue; north to Falls Park Drive; and east to the Sports Complex. People can decorate their carts in red, white and blue; there will be judging with awards for best decorated cart.
Rain date for 4th at the Falls is July 5.
Kids Art Camp starts July 8
PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society is taking reservations for Kids Art Camp 2024 at Gallery 119.
The theme this year is “Spread Your Wings With Art.”
The July 8-12 camp is for children ages 6-12 and youths 12 years and up.
Art is age-appropriate and taught by various artists during the week.
Children will display their artwork at the Friday Night Art Show, from 6-8 p.m. July 12 at Gallery 119.
Children may sign up for morning or afternoon sessions.
Sessions:
9-11:30 a.m. Monday-Friday (ages 6-12 years)
12:30-3 p.m. Monday-Friday (ages 6-12 years)
Evening: 5-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday (ages 12 and up)
Cost for the camp is $60 a child/$50 for a second child in the same family.

Lapel Village Fair, Dawg Jog July 12-13
LAPEL — Lapel Village Fair is set for Friday, July 12, and Saturday, July 13, on Main Street in downtown Lapel.
There will be food, live music, crafts, a parade and more.
There will be entertainment under the tent daily.
Library will be open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days with limited service.
Bathrooms will be open. There will be a scavenger hunt and bookmark coloring for all ages.
Rummage sales also take place in town during the fair.

Jog/Fun Run
The Lapel Dawg Jog and Puppy Fun Run is planned for 8 a.m. on the Saturday.
The 5K Walk/Run costs $20 ($30 with T-shirt), and Kids Puppy Fun Run costs $10 (includes T-shirt).
Race day registration is from 6:45 to 7:30 a.m.; packet pickup is 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. and a pre-race meeting is set for 7:50 a.m.
Children’s run is set for about 9 a.m. (after the 5K race), at the Optimist Club. Tricycles and wagons are welcome if accompanied by an adult.
An $8 breakfast will be open to the public from 8 to 10 a.m.
Gallery showcase, classes coming up
PENDLETON — Pendleton Artists Society’s Member’s Showcase art show is set for July 5-31 at Gallery 119 in Pendleton.
The show will highlight artwork from various artists from PAS.
From 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 5, a public First Friday event is scheduled, during which people will have the chance to meet the artists, vote for a favorite artwork for the People’s Choice Award, and watch as art judge Jerry Wire announces the show’s winners.
Prize money will be awarded: First Place — $70, Second Place — $40, Third Place — $30, and People’s Choice Award — $20.
The gallery, located at 119 W. State St., Pendleton, also offers a variety of art classes for children and adults.

American Legion plans activities
PENDLETON — American Legion Post 117, 611 W. State St., Pendleton, plans the following events — open to members and non-members:
July 12: DJ Dex 8-11 p.m.
July 13: Benefit Ride for Sweet Liberty Ranch and Rescue. Ride starts at noon at the post. Vendors, bake sale, 50/50 drawings and music are planned in the evening after the ride.
July 26: DJ Dex 8-11 p.m.

All-you-can-eat wings — 5-8 p.m. Thursdays for $15 (or $2 each).

Concert in the Park set for July 28
PENDLETON — The Rock Bottom Boys of Madison County and Blue Grass Trio will perform a Concert in the Park at 6 p.m. Sunday, July 28, near the Falls Park Gazebo.
There is no admission charge. People can bring their own chairs or blanket. Refreshments will be available for purchase.

Friends group gears up for duck race
PENDLETON — Friends of the Pendleton Community Library’s Lucky Duck Race is set for 2 p.m. Sept. 7 in Falls Park near the falls.
The event raises funds to help Pendleton Community Public Library, 595 E. Water St.
People can “adopt” a duck at the library or during one of the following events: INCourage 5K and Kids Color Run — July 13; Pendleton Indiana Farmers Market — July 20, Aug. 10; and Heritage Fair — Sept. 6-7.
Friends is a non-profit organization that aims to enhance library resources, services, programs and community outreach.

Town seeks input on revitalization plan
PENDLETON — The Town of Pendleton is in the early stages of submitting a planning grant application to Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs to develop a new Downtown Revitalization Plan.
Planning grants are funded with Federal Community Development Block Grant dollars from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The program aims to encourage communities to plan for long-term holistic community development.
